Base Info & Events
We are located at Woolverstone Marina, Woolverstone, Ipswich.
Woolverstone Marina is located on the picturesque River Orwell. The marina was developed from a site used by the Royal Navy as a base for the tank landing craft preparing for the D-Day landings, and shares the site with the Royal Harwich Yacht Club.
Ipswich lies on the river Orwell and together with the river Stour are among the most tranquil stretches of water to be found on the UK coast. The mix of ancient folklore, attractive scenery, wildlife and modern marina facilities make this an ideal sailing base to explore the East Coast.
The Orwell and the Stour are designated as special protection areas for birds and provide excellent sailing. A number of short passages are possible from the immediate area including the Walton Backwater and the river Deben to Woodbridge and further a field the river Blackwater to Maldon.
Longer passages are possible to Aldeburgh and Southwold to the north and Burnham on Crouch and Chatham to the south, as well as cruises up the Thames as far as St. Katherine’s Dock in the centre of London.
For an experienced sailor the crossing to Belgium and Holland is about 80 miles.
