Base info & Events
We are located at Chatham Maritime Marina, on the River Medway in Kent. The Medway is recognised as one of Britain’s most important rivers for leisure activities and has a fascinating and illustrious maritime heritage. The Medway Estuary and the neighbouring Swale provide a network of sheltered tidal waters that are ideal for cruising with the possibility of secluded overnight anchorages or lazy lunch stops in quiet creeks. Much of the Medway and Swale is of great conservation significance due to extensive salt marshes and migrating birds.
The river is navigable for around 13 miles from its mouth at Sheerness to Rochester. Although most sailing craft are unable to pass the fixed bridge at Rochester, motor boats can reach a further 30km of non-tidal waters above Allington Lock to Tonbridge, through some of the Garden of England’s most attractive countryside.
From the Medway itself lies the wider cruising area of the East Coast and its beautiful rivers, while for those who wish to make longer passages, Ramsgate, Dover and the coasts of northern France, Belgium and Holland are all within reach.
At the same time the estuary has great cultural and historic interest. Rochester Cathedral dates from 604 and Rochester Castle, one of the finest of its kind, dates from the early years after the Norman Conquest. Further down river Chatham Historic Dockyard is developing as a heritage centre, reminding us of its days as a strategic base for the Royal Navy.
Chatham Maritime Marina is at the heart of a multi-million pound leisure and retail development that's set to become a major waterfront attraction. Adjacent to the marina is the historic Chatham dockyard, while Rochester is only minutes away. Chatham has excellent road and rail communications with much of South London only an hour away by road whilst Central London is just 40 minutes away by rail.
