Training

We have a minimum requirement of RYA Day Skipper Tidal (practical and theory) for our Members which you can gain through our integrated training programme.

However, we are also very conscious that obtaining your Day Skipper Qualification is just the beginning of your yachting and power boating experience and unless you are already an experienced sailor you will still be lacking the confidence to allow you, your friends and family to get the most out of yachting and power cruising.

Solent Nautical College is SailTime Hamble & Lymington’s unique dedicated training facility, having been established with the philosophy that the most rewarding way to enjoy time on the water is through learning and mastering a skill set.  We believe that the best way to achieve this is through quality instruction, regular practice and specific ongoing guidance and training.  As a Member, you, your family and friends already have access to a quality boat, but now we are able to add real value by matching regular boat access to top quality instruction, workshops and events. If you wish we can guide your progress to Yachtmaster and beyond.

By comparison, the traditional route of training is like taking your driving test without a car to drive.  Progress will be slow and the cost high!

Solent Nautical College is headed up by our vastly experienced Chief Instructor, Graeme Johnston.  Graeme came from a consumer orientated industry and building up a very impressive CV.  His achievements include running Neilson’s yacht fleet in Greece, before heading up their customer training programme in the UK.  Subsequently, Graeme became a prestigious ‘Clipper Ventures Yacht’ training skipper taking on novices and training them for round the world racing, before becoming a ‘Clipper Round the World Race’ Skipper, and bringing his boat and crew safely home.

With some 300,000 sea miles under his belt, and having gained both cruising and racing experience in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, we know that you will not find a better or more knowledgeable instructor to learn from.

Through SNC we provide integrated training, giving our Members and Owner-Members the benefit of private tuition, ongoing training workshops (with other members) and a natural route to competent seamanship, all at a fraction of the cost of traditional training. Our shore based workshops cover navigation, electronics, VHF, Rules of the Road, rope work, weather, first aid etc, whilst our practical workshops on the water include, mooring & boat handling under power, anchoring, sail trimming & Cruising chutes, navigation, maintenance, night time port entry etc. In addition we are running Offshore passages (can be part of mile building), night sailing and accompanied short cruises. Whether you join us as a novice or yachtmaster,we can help you achieve more than you had ever dreamed of.

With our obvious but totally unique approach, why given the choice, would you choose to train any other way?

For more information please call us or drop us an enquiry.  We look forward to hearing from you.
